    Project Overview

     

    Warburtons approached us to compare the effects of different Nitrogen application techniques on the baking quality of the milling wheat that we grow for them commercially whilst trying to reduce their Carbon Footprint.

    Our Solution

     

    Our solution took two forms.  Firstly we compared the effects of reducing the number of passes that we made with the fertiliser spreader and secondly we compared flat rate applications with variably applied applications with the N-Sensor.

    We used a Nitrogen Inhibitor fertiliser supplied by Yara to apply all our product in two or three passes rather than our usual four.  The trial was replicated twice across the field and there was a control strip as well.  We alternated flat rate and variable tramlines across the field and fertiliser was precision applied using liquid with our auto section controlled sprayer.

    Results

     

    • We got small yield variations across the trials
    • The baking samples produced a significant variation
    • All the individual trials were weighed using our weighbridge
    • Results were collated and presented to Warburtons

    Although the yield variations were small and not statistically significant the baking trials did show variation. Our standard four pass approach using variably application with the N-Sensor produced a noticeable and measurable benefit over any of the other trials.

    The trial was repeated again this year and we await the results with interest.
